If you have chosen to add hardwood floors to your home renovations you have made a great decision if you are planning to maintain the hardwood floors. Hardwood flooring is made from mature trees, and is treated when it is finished. But hardwood will absorb moisture and also scratch if something is dragged across it.

Leaving a puddle of water in your hardwood floors would not be a great idea. The moisture will go into the cracks in between the slates and they will swell as they absorb the water. You can choose to put area rugs under the furniture to protect the floors or you can put felts on the bottoms of the furniture legs. Also you could add some area rugs to the highly traveled areas in your home such as kitchens, hallways, in front of the couch.

Some homeowners like the character that scratches and dents give the floor. If you have a lot of dents and scratches then it is an option to have your hardwood floors refinished. You may need to have your hardwood floors refinished every ten years or so, this will also add a protective top coat to your hardwood floors. Everything you do from moving furniture to allowing your dog to roam in the house will affect your hardwood floors.

There is a large amount of energy cost that goes towards using your home appliances. The best way to save energy here is to shop for new appliances that have the energy star. The cost of these products may be higher then normal but they are worth the extra money in the long run.

There are also solar panles that are available that can heat water they are called solar thermal collectors. What a great way to use the suns natural energy and to make your home energy efficient.
