3-on-3 Basketball Rules

3-on-3 basketball is often played as a casual tournament in schools and communities. In 3-on-3 basketball, three players forming one team take on another three-player team in a shortened game of basketball. The winner is the first team to reach a set amount of points. Spectators often enjoy this type of game because it has all of the action of a regular basketball game in a shortened amount of time. If you are playing in a 3-on-3 tournament, ensure that you understand all of the rules that apply.

Players
In order to play 3-on-3 basketball, you can't have more than three players from each team on the court at any given time. Substitutions for players can be made if necessary, but must be done after a basket or during a stop in the game play. At least two team members must be on the court to resume the game, according to Cornell University.

Time Frame
The length of the game varies, and is usually decided upon by the tournament host. Most will choose a point amount to decide the win. For instance, the team that gets 15 points first is the winner of the game. Games must be won by at least two points, with a 20-point cap. Some hosts will also place a time limit on the game, such as 30 minutes.

Court Size
3-on-3 basketball is played on a half court. Both teams shoot for the same basket, and the half court line becomes the out-of-bounds line. Ball-checking occurs out-of-bounds beneath the basket, and regular side boundaries are acknowledged.

Officiating
Most often, 3-on-3 games are officiated by the players themselves. Offensive players call offensive fouls, and defensive players call defensive fouls. An objective moderator can step in to help diffuse heated disputes between players.

Game Play
The starting possession should be decided by a coin toss or a shootout where the first basket wins possession. When fouled, a moderator will decide on the course of action. Some fouls will require a foul shot, while some will result in an automatic point for the other team. In the case of a tie at the end of timed play, the first team to score a basket wins.
