Playing three-on-three basketball is a great way to train for the game. It also makes it possible to enjoy basketball with just a few friends. People can even enter three-on-three basketball tournaments. The game is played on a half-court with a regulation basketball and a few modified rules. A coin toss determines who has first possession of the ball.
Shooting
The offensive team is obligated to make one pass before attempting a shot. Two points are awarded for shots made behind the three-point arc and one point is given for a made on or within the arc. Possession of the ball changes each time a basket is made.
Check Line
The three-point arc serves as the "Check Line." The ball must start beyond the arc at each half's beginning. When there's a defensive rebound or steal, players need to move the ball across the three-point line before attempting a basket. Dribbling and passing are permitted. Any player can shoot; the ball does not have to be passed before it's shot in this instance.
Fouls
Fouls are called by the defense. When there's a disagreement, a "do or die" shot is used. The player making the call takes this shot at the top of the three-point arc. The call stands if he makes the shot. There's no call if he misses the shot. Rebounding is not allowed on missed foul shots. The opposing team gets the ball if the foul shooter misses.
Stalling
Stalling results in a change of possession. A person who holds the ball without dribbling for more than 5 seconds is guilty of stalling. The defense has to count up to five aloud to call a stall.
