The Tip
Name of basic foot skills {or use your own} –
‘Ball of foot roll’ – both feet individually, roll ball around using only ball of foot under toes.
‘Pin Ball’ – rapidly moving the ball back and forth between the instep of your feet, younger kids like making the pin ball machine sound. Variation is to spin in either direction while maintaining control of the ball.
‘Tap Dance’ – ball is stationary between the feet, lightly tap the top of the ball with alternating foot touches. Work for speed.
‘Cross Over’ – first a step where one foot ends up crossing in front of, and ending up next to the other foot. Then add a ball in front, start in a letter ‘K’ with the ball under the ball of one foot. Roll in front of other foot, do the cross over step, and stop the ball in a reverse letter ‘K’ position. Once this is mastered, slowly walk forward while doing this.
‘Pull Back’ – dribble the ball on either side, then using the foot opposite the direction you are going, pull the ball sharply backwards WITHOUT putting your back to the ball at any time.
‘Cut Back’ – similar to the pull back, but is not a complete change of direction, but rather a redirection of the ball that can occur many times rapidly {ask me to demonstrate as words are not sufficient}.
‘Stick Horse’ – similar to the motion a player needs to use to move the ball rapidly between the instep and outside step of a foot when dribbling. Alternate lead foot and then demonstrate with cones and a ball.
‘Fussy Feet’ – any time a player holds onto a ball when they should have passed, shot, crossed, throw in, etc. the ball and held onto it too long or tried to make it just too perfect. They will never, ever be allowed the time to do this in a game situation. This is not panic, particularly when near a goal, it is about composure under pressure and being confident in your skills.
