How To Play Basketball: The Basics
Basketball is among the most appreciated sports all over the world, even if it was born over more than 150 years ago. If you want to learn how to play, start with the basics.

The proper game court is a must. Two basketball hoops that oppose each other are enough. You can play with a single hoop, if there is only you with a couple of friends on the court.

The purpose of the game is to score baskets.

A regular game of basketball is one hour long, with periods of one quarter of an hour.

At start, the two teams line up around the two centers. Then the ball is thrown into the air and the centers jump to gain it and throw it to other members of their teams.

Offense is important when you have the ball. The purpose is to score, by sending the ball through the other team's hoop. You will get two points for each field goal, and three points for shots from outside the three point line.

You can make the ball move towards the other hoop by passing and dribbling.

Here is how you dribble: the ball must bounce into the floor continuously. Your goal is to reach the other hoop, but, once you cross the mid court, you will not be allowed to get back.

A dribble ends when you stop running and you keep the ball in your hands. There are only two options: shoot or pass. But you can also use the pivot option. This means that you must use one foot as a pivot and then pass or shoot. Any mistake is penalized as a traveling foul, and continuing with another dribble, the same. Be careful: you cannot keep the ball for more than 5 seconds.

The pas has simple rules. You must always advance in defense and you cannot send the ball back, once you reach the mid court.

When you are on defense, your goal is to gain possession of the ball. You can steal the ball while an opponent dribbles or during a pass. Physical contact with the other players for getting the ball will be penalized with a foul. Once you get your hands on the ball, you can launch the offense.

There are two ways to build up your defense. The zone defense which requires the team to cover an area, and the man to man defense, which requires each team player to take care of an opponent's movements. The second method is efficient against teams that have difficulties during dribbles, while the first is recommended against teams that are strong at going for the hoop.

Any player that commits five fouls during the game gets removed from the court.

When a player is fouled while making a shot, he gets a free throw, from the free throw line. He gets two shots or three, if he was fouled behind the 3 point line. The line must not be touched when performing the shots.

Another rule is the 3 second violation. While on offense, you cannot stay in the area under the basket for more than 3 seconds.

A good strategy of playing is to make use of rebounds. A rebound can happen when a team commits a mistake and the other has the opportunity to launch the attack. The right rebound can lead to a fast break, when the team in advantage moves quickly on the field, passes and then scores.

Positions are very important, as well. The guards are those that like to dribble and pass. The shooting guard is the one taking the shots, and the point guard is entitled with the offense.

Forwards are the players trained for offense and they do most of the shooting.

The center is the tallest player of each team. He is the one that is responsible for passes, shots and rebounds.
